Install
Install on the plant PC
Nexa Edge installs for the whole PC, as a Windows service that starts with Windows and runs with nobody logged in.
Run the installer
- Run
NexaEdgeSetup-<version>.exewith an administrator account. If SmartScreen stops it, see SmartScreen. - Pick the language (English or French) and accept the default folder.
- Tick Create a desktop shortcut if you want one. The Start menu entry is always added.
- On the last page, leave Open Nexa Edge to set it up ticked and click Finish.
The service is installed and started straight away. Until it has a gateway token it waits, and the app says so. Continue with Connect to Nexa.
What it installs
| What | Details |
|---|---|
| Nexa Edge serviceNexaEdge | Reads the machines and sends to Nexa. Starts automatically with Windows; if it fails, Windows restarts it after 5 s, 10 s, then 60 s. Runs as NT SERVICE\NexaEdge, a virtual account with no password and no rights beyond its own folder. |
| Nexa Edge Update serviceNexaEdgeUpdate | Installs signed updates. Stopped except while an update runs, and only the Nexa Edge service may start it. |
| The app | Program Files\Nexa Edge\NexaEdge.exe, in the Start menu as Nexa Edge. The set-up and status screen. |
| The data folder | %ProgramData%\nexa-edge: settings, sending rules, the OPC UA certificate, the send buffer and the logs. |
Who may change it
Only administrators of the PC, and the service itself. The installer gives the data folder to the Administrators group and removes everyone else’s access, so nothing an ordinary user runs can change where data goes, what is read or the sending rules.
- Any user may read the logs and see the gateway’s status in the app.
- The token and passwords in the settings are encrypted for this PC. Copied to another PC they are useless.
- The service checks the folder’s permissions at start and every 10 minutes. If someone loosened them, the app’s Run tab says so in red; running the installer again repairs them.
Unattended install
For software deployment tools, from an elevated prompt. The service is installed and started exactly as with the wizard.
.\NexaEdgeSetup-<version>.exe /VERYSILENT /SUPPRESSMSGBOXESThe gateway is then set up from the app, or by restoring a backup from another gateway: see Backup and restore.
Upgrading from 0.2
From 0.3 on, Nexa Edge updates itself. Gateways still on a 0.2 version have no updater, so install the latest version by hand, once, over the old one:
- The installer closes and removes the old per-user app, and moves its settings, certificate and unsent data to the service.
logs\migration.loglists what moved. - If you install from a different Windows account than the one that set Nexa Edge up, enter the token and the OPC UA password again in the app.
- Nothing is deleted from the old folder.
Uninstall
Use Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Nexa Edge → Uninstall. This stops and removes both services and the programs. Data that was still waiting to be sent stays on the PC but is no longer sent.
The data folder, %ProgramData%\nexa-edge, is kept so a reinstall picks up where it left off. Delete it by hand to remove every trace, including the gateway’s token.
